Homemade Applesauce (Slow Cooker)

My kids could eat applesauce almost every day. While I don’t eat it that often, this homemade version with no sugar added is hard to resist. Usually I make this a couple of times after we go apple picking. I often make it at least once right away, and then once or twice more when the apples have been around a little while and aren’t quite as crisp as we might like. They cook up beautifully in this, and they don’t go to waste. This recipe makes a decent amount, and when I first used to make it and my first son was small, I often froze half of it. Now I can barely keep any in the house once I make it; it disappears so quickly!

I love this recipe because it is so easy! While some recipes require cooking the apples on the stove and others require you to chop the apples into small pieces, this recipe is pretty simple. My favorite way to make this is with a variety of orchard apples. We always pick many different kinds and, most of the time, when we get home, I can’t remember which ones are which. So I just use a nice variety that fills the slow cooker, and it’s delicious every time. The mixing of varieties, I think, makes the best flavor. I do think having some in there that are good for baking/sauce is probably a good thing, but they definitely don’t all need to be! Be creative and have fun! An added bonus is this makes your house smell delicious all day!

Homemade Applesauce (Slow Cooker)

Course Snack

Ingredients

  • 14 apples (Approximately) I like to use several different varieties mixed together
  • 2 T. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • Peel and quarter the apples, removing the core.
  • In a large slow cooker, add all the apples and toss with lemon juice, cinnamon and nutmeg until evenly coated.
  • Cover and cook on low for about four hours until apples are soft. (The large the apple pieces the longer it will take. If they are large apples I sometimes cut the quarters into slightly smaller pieces).
  • Blend with an immersion blender.
  • Allow to cool to a good temperature and enjoy!
